Guwahati: Gauhati University’s Department of Geography recently launched an Advanced Study and Resource Cell.
According to an official statement, a geography seminar room was also opened at an event on August 24.
The new facilities were made in honor of Dr. Manmohan Das, former Professor and Director of Geography at Gauhati University with generous funding from GU alumni Dr. Jitendra K. Baruah and Dr. Gita R. Baruah.
Dr. Jitendra and Gita Baruah are based in Brookfield, Wisconsin in the United States.
Former Vice Chancellor of GU, Dr. GN Talukdar opened the Advanced Studies and Resource Cell.
Prof. Manmohan Das opened the geography seminar room and shared his thoughts.
The event was chaired by Professor Madhushree Das, Head of Department and Dean of the Faculty of Science.
The meeting held on the occasion brought together members of the geography fraternity, including teachers, students and researchers from GU and other institutions, as well as officers and faculty members from various departments of GU .
At the beginning, after congratulations and the lighting of the lamp, Prof. Bimal K. Kar informed everyone present about the program and briefly introduced Prof. Manmohan Das and donors Dr. JK Baruah and Dr. Gita R. Baruah.
Opening the guest lecture program, Dr. MC Bhuyan, Former Registrar, GU, emphasized the need to orient the geography of the discipline towards addressing contemporary emerging issues.
Guest speaker Dr. GK Panda, Emeritus Professor of Geography, Utkal University, Bhubaneswar delivered his speech on disaster management policies.
During the meeting, a book titled “Changing Environmental Systems and Emerging Challenges” edited by Prof. Ashok K. Bora and Prof. Madhushree Das was also published by Dr. GN Talukdar.
