The Commercial Fishing Resource Fund receives money from an increase in commercial fishing license fees implemented in 2015. The fund pays for observer coverage to fulfill the state’s obligations under bycatch licenses to sea turtles and Atlantic sturgeon under the Federal Endangered Species Act.
Any money left in the fund must be used for projects to develop and support a sustainable commercial fishery in the state. Projects must be approved by the six commercial fisheries representatives of the Commercial Fisheries Resource Fund Committee and the Commercial Fisheries Resource Fund Committee of the Marine Fisheries Commission, made up of commission members holding the three commercial fishing seats, by division.
These committees operate independently of the division, although the Marine Fisheries Division provides support for their meetings.
